The MASO Cup was jointly hosted by Altona Magic and Sydenham Park FC over the Australia Day long weekend. The first MASO Cup in Victoria and the biggest tournament in terms of participating teams and clubs.
Our over 35 boys were desperately unlucky not to make the semi finals despite finishing their group games without a loss next to their name.
Our first grade boys topped their pool by defeating sister club Arncliffe Scots, which was followed by a 0-0 draw against Cringila Lions (Football South Coast) and finally a solid 2-0 win over last year’s runners up Preston Lions (VIC).
In the quarter final, we turned it up with a comprehensive 6-1 win over Lalor Sloga (VIC). We then took on co-hosts Altona Magic. It was a high tempo game and we ran out 2-0 winners again.
The final was the last game on the schedule and with the temperature nudging 40 degrees, our boys took on Northern NSW powerhouse, Broadmeadow Magic. We got off to the worst possible start going down 3-0 early before clawing back to 3-2. Unfortunately time was against us and the Cup would not be returning to our trophy cabinet for the first time in 4 years.
It was still a great weekend for our boys as we continue our preparations for the upcoming NPL 1 competition.
Many thanks to our players who were left exhausted after playing 3 games in very very hot conditions on the Sunday.
A special thank you as well to our Assistant Coach Matt Ribarovski, team stewards Jove Ckorovski and Jimmy Keremelevski, and our physio for the weekend, Nicole.
This Sunday we take on defending champions Manly United in a pre-season friendly away at Cromer Park.
