In one of the fiercest rivalries in NSW football, Sydney Olympic traveled to Ilinden Sports Centre and suffered a heavy 4–1 defeat at the hands of Rockdale Ilinden.
The hosts were clinical in attack, with a brace from Moudi Najjar, a superb strike from Brendan Cholakian, and a cheeky back-heel from Ollie Wiggin cancelling out Marco Arambasic’s first-half equaliser. The contest showcased high intensity, robust tackling, and a plethora of quality finishing.
Najjar opened the scoring in the 31st minute, only for Arambasic to equalise just two minutes later with a powerful header, leaving the sides level at the break. However, Rockdale returned with a bang after halftime, as Cholakian produced a world-class finish and Najjar added his second, before Wiggin’s clever back-heel completed the emphatic scoreline.
The game had early drama, with Cholakian going close in the 3rd minute and Olympic’s Bailey Callaghan being denied by the alert Giorgio Speranza. Rockdale began exploiting space down the flanks, with Najjar narrowly missing a header from a precise Speranza delivery, followed by another long-range effort from Cholakian sailing just over the bar. Olympic were dealt a blow midway through the first half when Jerry Skotadis was forced off with an injury, replaced by Lochlan Consable.
Najjar broke the deadlock with a perfectly timed run onto a defense-splitting pass from Harry McCarthy, slotting the ball past Josip Orlovic. Ilinden momentarily lost concentration, allowing Arambasic to equalise with a thunderous header from Yujo Fujita’s pinpoint cross. Olympic created several chances thereafter, but were unable to convert, taking the sides into halftime level at 1–1.
The second half belonged to Rockdale. Najjar reclaimed the lead in the 53rd minute after a superb long pass from Harry van der Saag allowed him to chip over Orlovic. Cholakian came close again, but it was Najjar who struck in the 66th minute, cutting in from the left and curling a sublime finish around the defence and keeper—a goal worthy of highlight reels. The scoring was completed when Speranza delivered a cross from the left, allowing Wiggin to back-heel home the fourth.
While Sydney Olympic showed moments of attacking promise, Rockdale proved far too ruthless, accurate, and committed, producing a memorable evening for their fans and a striking display of finishing that left little doubt about the dominant winners.
